A Morpeth man has beaten off competition from across the country to land a new apprenticeship.

Owen Legender is one of nine driver apprentices taken on by building material supplier CEMEX UK following a national recruitment drive.

It is the first time the company has offered a driver apprenticeship scheme, which will run for a year in conjunction with Systems Training.

It aims to address a shortage of drivers in the business.

Mr Legender, who is working out of the CEMEX Divet Hill quarry in Capheaton, gained his place after completing a course in electrical engineering.

He said: “CEMEX colleagues were very welcoming and encouraging.

“I’m looking forward to obtaining my LGV licence and continuing my career with the company.”
