College focuses on apprentices

APPRENTICESHIPS will be in the spotlight when a Government minister visits the county tomorrow.

A special summit is taking place at Northumberland College’s Kirkley Hall campus. It has been organised by Guy Opperman, MP for the Hexham constituency, who has actively promoted the issue and seen a 50 per cent increase in apprentices at a local level during recent months.

The keynote speaker is Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, Matt Hancock.

After his speech, Mr Opperman and college officials as well as guests from businesses and organisations in the region will have a round-table discussion with him about the current and future provision of skilled apprenticeships and how best to increase job opportunities for them.

Awards will also be given out during the afternoon to four apprentices from Northumberland for their outstanding achievements.
