Garden centre digs deep for cancer support

COUNTER-TOP collections for charity have topped the £10,000 mark at a Northumberland garden centre.

Dobbies Garden World in Ponteland has raised the staggering sum for Macmillan Cancer Support over the past 19 years.

The total comes entirely from check-out collection boxes, however, the outlet has added significantly more to the charity’s funds by taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning events, organising pancake days and donating prizes for draws.

The centre has also provided table centres for Macmillan find-raising events.

Dobbies staff member Kristin Mason said: “Dobbies has been proud to support Macmillan. It is a fantastic charity, which offers vital support across the UK. The money raised by our generous customers will help the charity to continue making a difference to the lives of those people living with cancer.”

Jennifer Temple, of Macmillan’s Morpeth and District Committee, has enjoyed a close working relationship with Dobbies over the past decade.

She said: “We have received constant support from Dobbies and its staff under the management of Mr Graham Darling until 2012 and since then under the management of Mr Paul Travis-Anderson.

“We have greatly appreciated its involvement.

“The money raised from its collecting boxes has been amazing and it goes a long way to supporting our services locally.”

Macmillan Cancer Support provides a range of services and assistance for people living with cancer and their families.
