A NORTHUMBERLAND tour operator is flying high after picking up a trio of national accolades.

The Activity Travel Company – made up of brands Activities Abroad, The Aurora Zone and The White Circle – was among the winners at the prestigious British Travel Awards ceremony in London.

Activities Abroad was voted Best Small Holiday Company in the Family and Activity/Sports categories and The Aurora Zone was Best Small Holiday Company in the Adults Only section.

The firm, based in Netherton Park near Stannington, was created by local entrepreneur Alistair McLean and has now been running for 11 years.

He said: “For a company operating out of a converted farmhouse in rural Northumberland, this is a remarkable achievement.

“I couldn’t be more grateful to our team, our suppliers and our obviously very content customers who kindly voted for us.

“We’ve all worked so hard to achieve something truly special whilst sticking to our responsible and social business ethos, and these awards are a fitting reward. It’s simply great.”

Activities Abroad specialises in family activity holidays in both winter and summer and The Aurora Zone was created to give clients the very best chance of seeing the spectacular Northern Lights and highlights the innovative concept of Aurora-hunting (actively going out to seek the lights rather than remaining in one location). It provides holidays across Finland, Sweden, Norway and Iceland.

The White Circle is the latest addition to the portfolio. It offers adult-only winter experiences in Scandinavia.

Lorraine Barnes-Burton, chief executive of the British Travel Awards, said: “This year more than one million votes were cast by consumers to determine the winners of the coveted British Travel Awards making it the largest awards programme in the UK – to win is truly an accolade.”
