Highs and lows for sector

Manufacturers in the North East are leading the way on European exports.

An annual Regional Manufacturing Outlook report, by manufacturers’ organisation EEF and global law firm DLA Piper, shows that 69.2 per cent of North East exports are to Europe — the highest proportion in the UK.

However, the area is responsible for just 4.2 per cent of the UK’s total manufacturing output, the lowest contribution of any region.

Manufacturing employs 11 per cent of the region’s workforce, with more than 125,000 employed in the sector.
