Head Housekeeper Susan Brougham is finally putting up her feet after 16 years’ service at a luxury country hotel.

The 62-year-old, who was AA Hotel Housekeeper of the Year runner-up in 2011, will be leaving Matfen Hall Hotel as she retires after 43 years in the industry.

Her duties have included supervising staff, solving guests’ problems, arranging flowers, and even showing off her sewing skills after stitching a bride’s veil when it was torn.

She said: “I am old-school and I believe it is all about service — about anticipating what the guest may expect and require before they have even arrived, and then providing it as calmly and efficiently as you can.”

Ms Brougham will be handing on her responsibilities to Julie Golightly.
