A Northumberland hotel has taken the country’s highest honour for tourism excellence after scooping a national award.

Matfen Hall Hotel, Golf and Spa was named Best Large Hotel at the prestigious VisitEngland Awards for Excellence.

And the stately home hotel also claimed a Gold Award – the highest level that can be bestowed.

Managing Director Bernard Bloodworth said: “I am absolutely delighted for the entire team at Matfen Hall in receiving this most prestigious national award from VisitEngland.

“This award recognises the long-term approach that Sir Hugh and Lady Blackett have taken with their ancestral home, and the support they have given the team over many years.

“But all of this would not have been possible without the wonderful loyalty we have been shown by our regular guests and members.

“I would also like to congratulate the other regional winners and finalists. We are all fiercely proud of this region and I’m sure that these awards will further increase awareness of the North East as a holiday location to the rest of the UK and beyond.”

The award was presented by G4S Utility and Outsourcing (UK) Managing Director Simon Best on behalf of Quality in Tourism at a ceremony at the Sage Gateshead last week.

VisitEngland Chief Executive James Berresford said: “We received hundreds of applications of an exceptionally high quality, making the competition for a Gold Award extremely tough. It is therefore a tremendous achievement for Matfen Hall to win a Gold Award, the highest accolade for Excellence in Tourism.”
