TWO businesses from the Morpeth Herald area have been chosen for the shortlist in the Local Business Accelerators competition.

Barkers Northumberland, a canine hydrotherapy centre, and Kayola’s Deli, both in Morpeth, made it to the final 10 picked from across the county, who are now in with a chance to win expert advice and a substantial package of free advertising.

In addition, Dragon’s Den star Deborah Meaden will become a mentor to one overall business, picked from the hundreds of regional winners, providing invaluable business support throughout 2012 to drive their business forward.

The nationwide campaign, which was launched in October by regional and local newspapers across the country and backed by Prime Minister David Cameron and Deborah Meaden, will see 1,500 firms receive £15m of free advertising to help boost their businesses in 2012.

Judges reported that entries in Northumberland were of an extremely high standard, with enthusiastic local firms recognising the benefits that local advertising can bring.

Members of Northumberland’s business community, Alnwick-based renewables and food and drink entrepreneur Ian Brown, Robbie Dalgleish, a partner at Greaves West and Ayre accountants in Berwick, and Phil Langton, chief executive of Northumberland Business service Limited, alongside Northeast Press managing director, Stuart Birkett, will form the judging panel and will review and shortlist entries before awarding three lucky local businesses with the prize of free advertising and business advice.

They will also be looking out for that one overall star business to put forward to be in with a chance to gain Deborah Meaden as a mentor during 2012.

Others chasing one of the three places on the Northumberland shortlist are DM Designs, of Berwick, Get Stripped Wax Bar & Beauty, of Tweedmouth, Amble-based K B Surveying and builder Michael Mossman, from Acklington

Then there is Bedlington-based The Vegbox Company, Stanna Productions, of Dudley, Cramlington, Ashington-based Blitz Clean and CJ Performance Cycles Ltd, based in Cramlington.

The three lucky winners will be published in the Morpeth Herald on January 12.
