A MORPETH businessman is delighted with his early success after reeling in clients from all parts of the globe.

Founded earlier this year, Bob Smith Fly Fishing provides private tuition and courses to suit all levels and abilities, from experienced fishermen to first-time fly fishers.

With access to private river beats, he is gaining business from the corporate market for team building days, hotels, tourists and local enthusiasts keen to learn about technique or refine their skills.

Some tourists have come from abroad, including the Middle East, USA and Australia.

Mr Smith set up the company up after spending several years working for renowned fishing tackle manufacturers Hardy and Greys in Alnwick.

He was invited to become a member of the Hardy and Greys Game Fishing Academy, an accreditation held by only a handful of people.

“I have been truly overwhelmed by the amount of people keen to learn about fly fishing and the national and international interest in particular has been very rewarding,” he said.

“Although I started coaching fly fishing as a hobby a few years back, the business has really taken off so clearly there is demand for this type of activity.

“I have met some really interesting people since we started and hope more will visit the region to try their hand at this superbly enjoyable sport. Having fished for over 50 years, I’ve always found it’s a great way to relax, unwind and get outdoors.”

The former teacher is the founder of the Hirst Park Trout Ticklers Fishing Club, which aims to encourage parents and children to fish together. Since starting in 1997, it has introduced more than 800 members to trout fishing.

Mr Smith has been featured on Sky Sports and he is a trustee of the Northumbrian Anglers’ Association.
