Scheme is set to provide funding

Coastal villages in an area of Northumberland have received a grant support boost.

The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills has published a map of the areas in the UK that will enjoy ‘Assisted Area Status’ from later this year and Ellington and Lynemouth are among the places that can benefit from the scheme.

Subject to approval by the European Commission later this month, it will mean that Government grants are available to businesses that support jobs by investing in machinery and equipment.

Sir Alan Beith MP, whose constituency includes Ellington and Lynemouth, said the news will be a ‘real shot in the arm’ for the towns and villages in the county that have been selected.

He added: “Over the past few years we have lost out on Assisted Area Status and the support it provides for businesses, but the Government has listened to the arguments I put forward along with many others keen to see it include some of Northumberland.”
