A FORMER college lecturer from Northumberland has been elected National President of the University and College Union (UCU).

Ashington Mayor John McCormack, who lectured in trade union studies at Northumberland College, will take up the role in 2014 after serving as Vice-President for two years.

He will follow his colleague Kathy Taylor into the hot seat, marking the first time in the union’s history that its most senior lay position is consecutively filled by two members from the same college.

Mr McCormack was Branch Chairman of the union at the college for many years, where he campaigned against compulsory redundancies and for improvements in lecturers’ terms and conditions.

He was also Chairman of UCU’s Northern Region Committee and for the past four years has been a member of its National Executive Committee. He also serves on several regional and national bodies, including the Executive Committee of the Northern Region TUC.
