Website and social media prove a hit for traders

A website set up to encourage more visitors to Morpeth is proving a hit.

The More In Morpeth site was initially set up by the Morpeth and District Chamber of Trade to promote the town’s businesses.

Now it has been adopted by the Morpeth Town Team and developed to act as a one-stop shop visitor guide, with information on shopping, eating out, events, local attractions and accommodation.

It also offers a free business listing section for local traders, as well as opportunities for people to sign up for e-newsletters.

Visitor numbers to the site increased by 44 per cent in 2014 on the previous year.

And in December the team spent £1,200 to modernise the site and make it compatible with mobile phones and tablets.

It is growing, but it could be more active if businesses got more involved in the website and started using it more.

Sanderson Arcade Manager Medi Parry said: “It is important for us to be moving with the times and to be up to date with all the latest technology. It is really growing.”

The website is also at the heart of promotional activity, with the latest Town Team visitor leaflets, which are distributed across the region, directing people to its pages.

Town councillor and chamber member Nic Best said: “It is growing, but it could be more active if businesses got more involved in the website and started using it more.”

Social media is also proving popular for the More In Morpeth brand, with 670 followers on Twitter and its Facebook page attracting 900 likes.
