Businesses on ‘Oscars’ shortlist

BUSINESSES in Northumberland have made it to the regional finals of the Countryside Alliance Awards.

The annual honours aim to celebrate the characters, skills, traditions and enterprise of the countryside, with members of the public making the nominations.

This year Blagdon Farm Shop, which is based at the Milkhope Centre, has been shortlisted in the Local Food Category, while Belsay Shop in The Arcade is going for glory in the Village Shop/Post Office section.

The North East winners will be announced next month and will then go on to represent the region in the Grand Final in Parliament in March.

Countryside Alliance North East Director Simon Hamlyn said: “The North East continues to have a tough year with bad weather affecting the harvest and tourism. It is vital that we support our small rural businesses through this time and help to revive our local economy. Celebrating them in the rural Oscars gives them a well-deserved boost.”
