A petition has been launched in support of a Morpeth toilet cleaner whose job is under threat.

Michelle Stewart has won national awards in the past for keeping the public loos at Morpeth Bus Station spick and span.

However, the petition posted to the website by Leanne Chapman says that there are plans to switch the current arrangement of fully attending the facilities at the station to shared rotational cleaning with the town’s two other public toilets in order to save costs.

More than 500 people have signed it so far, with comments raising concerns that the bus station toilets would not be maintained to the current very high standards if this change is implemented.

The petition can be accessed by going to and clicking on the ‘Search’ option at the top – type Leanne Chapman.
