CATS: Owners could take more care

I am writing after reading the recent article reporting the poisoning of cats in the Kirkhill area, (Morpeth Herald, October 20).

While I could never condone cruelty to any animal, may I suggest that perhaps cat owners could take a more responsible approach in keeping their pets safe?

Over the years, dog owners have been under constant pressure to keep their pets on a lead and to clear up when their dogs foul on any public area.

However, cats appear to have the freedom to come and go as they please, and not only stray onto the highway, which could cause an accident. They are also free to foul anywhere they choose to, very often on a neighbour’s nice tidy garden.

On the Kirkhill Estate, I have seen only one responsible cat owner who walks their cat on a lead. Thus, the cat is kept safe at all times and is never a nuisance to anybody.

If other cat owners followed this example, the problem of poisoning would be eradicated completely. Problem solved.
