Celebrate the life of the street with poetry
A special celebration of a Morpeth street is set to take place at the beginning of September.
The aim of the Newgate Street Poetry Festival is to promote the unique blend of independent businesses in the area, whilst at the same time celebrating literature and the arts in Morpeth.
The events will coincide with Heritage Open Days, running from Monday, September 5 to Saturday, September 11.
The festival will celebrate the street and its history.
It will feature a poem in every window of participating premises, and there will also be a programme of pop up Open Mics in all coffee shops and pubs in the street during the week.
Organiser Barbara Ross said: “I hold Newgate Street very dear to my heart, not least because I was brought up there, above my parents’ shop, Ross the Jewellers, and my own son has currently opened for business in Newgate Street, trading as Anderson’s Sandwich and Coffee Company.
“We have a strong following of local poets who are extremely enthusiastic and are already writing, and we already have a good store of poems about Newgate Street businesses.”
