A 90th anniversary is a very special occasion and we wanted to make sure that we marked it in a suitable way.
A party needed to be planned, obviously a cake would be essential, but what good is a cake with no one to share it with? Invitations were sent to our neighbouring WIs, Widdrington Village, Pegswood and Widdrington Station with Stobswood, as well as to Hilary Robson and Dorothy Sowerby, the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Northumberland Federation.
It was decided that we would do our own catering so we could get the best value for money and have exactly want we wanted.
The evening arrived. We were greeted with a sherry reception and were then seated for a delicious three course meal, which was elegantly presented and served by daughters and friends of Ulgham WI members.
Members and guests were impressed by the quality of the meal, many saying that they had been expecting a buffet and the succulent roast beef with all the trimmings had been a complete surprise.
During the latter stages of the meal we were entertained by a duet called Shaken Not Stirred, which consisted of a vocalist and an excellent saxophonist, who also played keyboard. They provided a magical mix of music, including a good old fashioned sing-along.
Our President Jean Brunning, who had made our superb anniversary cake, called on our most senior member Nancy Thompson, who has celebrated her 101st birthday, to cut the cake.
Nancy gave a warm and moving speech about what the WI gave to her and finished by saying, as she cut the cake, that she would like to put ‘best wishes in every slice’.
The toast was given by Hilary Robson, who was most complimentary, and she admitted to being a little jealous of our hall.
It had been a birthday party to remember.
Our hall looked wonderful, our members and guests stunning, the food delicious, the entertainment talented, the cake yummy, and the speeches heart-felt. What more could we ask for? Another 90 years maybe.

We ended 2014 with some special events.
Everyone enjoyed our Christmas night out at the Sun Inn, Morpeth. The meal was excellent, as were the staff, and a ‘Secret Santa’ meant that everyone received a small gift to end a fabulous evening.
Ulgham WI invited two of our ladies to its 90th birthday celebrations, and what a wonderful night it was, with a beautiful meal and plenty of wine, plus champagne. A mention must be made to the band, which was enjoyed by all, so thank you Ulgham.
Following that, we went to our annual Carol Service at Hexham Abbey, which is always a glorious occasion.
As another year begins, we are looking forward to our monthly meetings, with some interesting speakers arranged. We will also be arranging our local and social activities. If you would like to join us, contact 01670 791750.
