Charity appeal has winter all wrapped up

NORTHUMBERLAND residents are being urged to help keep older people warm this winter through a charity appeal.

Age UK has launched its Donate a Coat initiative as part of the Spread the Warmth campaign. People can hand in their old big jackets at their local Age UK shop, including the Morpeth branch in Newgate Street, to be sold on to raise money for its vital work.

Between the winters of 2006 and 2009 there were on average 1,547 excess winter deaths per year recorded in the North East. The charity and its local and national partners provide information, advice and practical services to help keep older people warm and well.

This includes getting nutritious meals to them, helping to keep homes warm and giving out free information 365 days a year.

Older people and their families can call Age UK Advice for free on 0800 1696565, where they can also order a free copy of the Winter Wrapped Up leaflet. Alternatively, they can visit to download the guide and get more information.

A selection of coats have been donated by celebrities and they will be available to buy from selected shops across the country. To find out which are available and where, visit
