Katherine Reay, a trainee lawyer with Northumberland County Council, conducted an old-fashioned completion when the freehold to Mitford Village Hall was recently transferred to Mitford Parish Council.

Some of her colleagues had reminisced about completions years ago when a small toast would be made.

Parish council clerk Stephen Rickitt used to work as a solicitor at County Hall and recognised an unsubtle hint. After council chairman Mike Sharp agreed that the acquisition should be marked, Mr Rickitt personally provided some glasses of sherry.

Coun Sharp toasted the transfer, saying it was pleasing that control of the village hall was truly with the local community. The lease to the village hall charity will continue.
