Four months after taking up running, a Northumberland resident will participate in the Sunderland City 10k on Sunday.
Jaime Walker signed up for the event last month and she is raising money for St David’s Hospice in Llandudno, North Wales.
Her sister Jodie Hayward and Jodie’s husband Stephen Hayward live in the area and Stephen’s mother Janice received care at the hospice. She died earlier this month.
Jaime, who moved to Hadston 11 years ago, decided to give the NHS Couch to 5k running plan a go from the start of this year.
This involves downloading information podcasts and doing weekly runs – the distance gets a little bigger each time – and she successfully completed the programme.
In relation to the Sunderland City 10k, she said: “I’m unable to attend Janice’s funeral as I have a young daughter and work commitments, so this is my way of doing something to help.
“I saw a notice for the run on Facebook and I got in touch with my friend Charlotte Laidler, who also did the Couch to 5k, and we agreed it would a good challenge to do together.
“I’m feeling a bit nervous as it’s the first organised running event that I’m taking part in, but I’m confident of completing the run because I’ve now done 11k a few times as I’m also building up to the Great North Run in September.
“Stephen and Jodie have been overwhelmed by the care and support provided by St David’s Hospice, so any donation no matter how small would be very much appreciated.”
