COMMEMORATION: An insult to a true war hero

The debacle over the commemorative stone for 2nd Lieut James Johnson VC being in the wrong place and the Order of Service being incorrect continues, (Morpeth Herald, November 15).

I requested, under the Freedom of Information Act, from County Hall what instructions, if any, it received from central government on 2nd Lieut Johnson’s personal details and where the stone was to be located.

The response was to the effect that no such instructions were given.

Those details are down to Northumberland County Council.

The situation that has arisen is entirely down to County Hall and the council should own up and apologise to all concerned.

What a lot of readers might not be aware of is that James Johnson was, in fact, the only Northumberland-born recipient of the five VCs awarded to the Northumberland Fusiliers.

The council did not get it right and by all accounts it seems it couldn’t care less. Shame on you all.

This is an absolute insult to a hero.
