Council to try new service

THE Ponteland Civic Service is set to return, albeit on a smaller scale than in the past.

Last year, a majority of Ponteland town councillors voted that the event should not take place after the original date was cancelled, saying the money for it could be spent better elsewhere.

But the authority has now agreed to try a trimmed-down version with a focus on the community. Representatives of the various organisations within Ponteland will be invited to a church service followed by refreshments and there will no longer be a pipe band march from the Memorial Hall to St Mary’s Church.
