Following his election to Morpeth Town Council earlier this year, Coun Johnny Wearmouth has been getting to grips with the many issues raised with him on the doorsteps around the Stobhill ward.
One of these matters is improving safety for school children crossing the road near Mafeking Roundabout.
There has been a vacancy for a school-crossing patrol officer at the crossing point near the roundabout for nearly ten years.
Other solutions such as a pelican or zebra crossing have been considered, but are not without their issues due to the junction’s layout.
Coun Wearmouth said: “Northumberland County Council has had some difficulty in filling the position. I think this partly is because, despite the efforts of officers, people are not aware there is a vacancy.
“The job is a paid position, £7.85 per hour, usually for an hour in the morning and again in the afternoon. I am sure that there will be someone out there in our community who would like to be of service in making sure children have a safe means of getting to school from the new term in September.
“There is also a vacancy for a crossing on Manchester Street, which the council is keen to fill.”
