A couple who used to live in Pegswood have reached a major milestone in their relationship.

Lennie and Hilda Plato recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary with a family party. Hilda was born in Pegswood, her parents were Samuel and Bella McCarthy, and Lennie moved to the village from London.

They met while both were working at Hoggs Store, Pegswood, in the bakery.

Lennie was 27 and Hilda 21 when they married at St Andrew’s Church, Bothal, on December 31, 1955.

All five of their children – Pat, Dawn, Leonard, James and Martin – were born before they moved in 1968 to Tring in Hertfordshire, where Lennie began working with his eldest brother. They have three grandchildren (Nicola, Lisa and Emma) and three great-grandchildren (Jake, Max and Matthew).
