Arrests over shoplifting

A TOTAL of 28 people have been arrested in Northumberland in a police crackdown on shoplifting.

Northumbria Police has so far arrested almost 350 suspects across the force area as part of Operation Soundwave, which was launched at the end of November to reduce theft and burglary over the festive season.

The initiative, which has seen extra high-profile officer patrols carried out, has resulted in a reduction in shoplifting offences compared to the weeks before the operation started, while the detection rate stands at almost 80 per cent.
