Beware of council-tax phone scam

RESIDENTS in Northumberland have been warned to be on their guard against a scam.

Northumberland County Council has issued the alert after a taxpayer was called by a man claiming to be from the authority who said there was a problem with the resident’s council-tax direct-debit payment.

He asked for the resident’s bank details and when he refused to provide them, the caller became agitated.

Anyone who receives such calls should hang up and contact the council on 0845 600 6400 to speak to its tax team.
