POLICE are warning people to be on their guard when using cash machines.
The alert comes after a distraction type theft at a cashpoint in Morpeth on Sunday.
A man and woman approached a man who was using the Lloyds TSB machine in Newgate Street at 4.20pm.
They distracted him and took his card and cash before making off.
They are described as black, in their 30s, of medium build and dressed smartly. The man is around 6ft tall and the woman between 5ft 5ins and 5ft 7ins.
DCI Peter Reeve said: “I’d ask members of the public when using cash machines to be vigilant and take care when withdrawing money.
“Always check the machine for any suspicious devices, if the machine doesn’t look right then don’t use it and report it to the bank or the police.
“Be aware of who’s around you while using the machines, shield your personal details as much as possible and if anyone tries to distract you whilst withdrawing money then make sure you take your card and cash back from the machine before leaving.
“Always report anything or anyone suspicious to police.”
Anyone with information about the theft should contact police on 03456 043043, ext 69191.
