Drivers warned of thefts

Police are urging motorists in Stakeford to lock their cars and remove all valuables after a spate of thefts.

In the last two weeks there has been 14 thefts from cars in the area.

The majority of these crimes happened to unlocked cars and the thieves stole items including sat navs, sunglasses and loose change.

Enquiries are ongoing into the thefts and officers are advising motorists to help deter thieves by taking a few simple steps.

• Ensure your car is locked whenever you leave it, especially overnight.

• Remove all valuables, take them inside overnight when you can and never leave them out on display.

• Be vigilant, report anyone loitering around parked cars and acting suspiciously to police straight away.

To report suspicious behaviour, or pass on information about the recent thefts, contact police on 101 ext 69191.

The advice forms part of Operation Soundwave, a Northumbria Police campaign aimed at tackling opportunist thieves across the force and promoting crime prevention.
