Finding of body prompts murder investigation

POLICE have launched a murder investigation after the death of a Ponteland woman.

At shortly after 3pm on Tuesday, police were called by the Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service to a fire inside a house in Meadowbank Drive, Choppington.

The fire was extinguished and the body of 48-year-old Jacqueline Grant, of Ponteland, was subsequently found in a bedroom.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Bentham, leading the investigation, said: “A post mortem examination was carried out yesterday evening and cause of death was determined as ligature strangulation.

“The victim also appears to have been assaulted and had a number of facial injuries. I am asking that anyone who has any information about this crime contact police at once.”

A 49-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder on Tuesday remains in police custody after magistrates this morning granted a warrant of further detention.

Police are asking that anyone who was in the area of Meadowbank Drive at around the time of the fire, or has any information about the incident, contact officers on 03456 043043.
