POLICE are urging staff at garages and forecourts in Northumberland to be on their guard for fuel thieves.
The warning comes after thieves stole number plates and used them on another vehicle to steal fuel from a garage in Heddon on the Wall.
At around 2.10pm on Tuesday, March 22, number plates were taken from a Vauxhall Corsa parked in Prudhoe and were then put on a white Vauxhall Astra van before £134 worth of diesel was stolen.
Officers have visited petrol stations in the area and spoken to staff about crime prevention.
East Tynedale Neighbourhood Inspector Kevin Oates said: “If anyone suspicious is using the pumps and taking large amounts of fuel then service station staff need to be aware.
“Take down licence number plate details and try to ensure CCTV picks up any potential offenders. If they suspect a crime is taking place they can contact police and we’ll respond.”
Anyone with any information about the theft can contact police on 03456 043043, ext 69191, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
