Hackers strike at council website

A council website has fallen victim to hackers.

Morpeth Town Council’s site is believed to have been targeted on Tuesday, April 7.

The website is down at the moment and should be coming back up once the manager of the site has done the necessary checks.

Staff discovered the attack when they were unable to update the site.

Due to its vulnerability, it was taken offline, both to protect the council and other groups using the site.

Town Clerk Gillian Turner said: “We are waiting for the report to come through as to exactly what happened.

“The website is down at the moment and should be coming back up once the manager of the site has done the necessary checks. Only the home page is up at the moment.

“It is a ‘.gov.uk’ site so it is slightly more at risk of people trying to hack it.”

The council was due to discuss remodelling the site as part of a regular review at its Finance and General Purposes Committee last night.

Ms Turner said: “It has nothing to do with being hacked. The website we have got at the moment is three years old and technology moves so quickly so we need to consider updating it and how we use it.”
