Ice causes road chaos

POLICE were kept very busy during a two-hour period on Tuesday morning.

There were a number of incidents on the roads, as cold weather made conditions more tricky than usual.

At about 7am, a van overturned and a Vauxhall Corsa crashed within a short space of time on the A697 between Heighley Gate Garden Centre and the A1, which closed the road for a few hours.

A van went on its side at 7.20am on Shields Road, Morpeth, and at 7.53am a car skidded off the Coldstream road into a field at North Broomhill.

At 8.17am, a car went off into a field in Acklington and six minutes later it was reported that a car was on its roof in West Road, Longhorsley.

A vehicle skidded into a ditch between Amble and Hadston at 8.30am and at 8.50am a car went off the B6343 at Mitford.

In all of these incidents there were no serious injuries.

At 7.50am a car skidded off the road near West Chevington Cottages. The driver got out of his vehicle, but was then hit by another car.

He was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital. His injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
