A MAN accused of murdering a Ponteland woman has appeared at crown court.

Stephen Streener was arrested following a death at his home in Meadowbank Drive, Choppington, a week last Tuesday.

He has been charged with the murder of Jacqueline Grant, 48, who lived with her husband Robert and 27-year-old son, also called Robert.

A plea and case management hearing will take place in February and a 10-day trial is expected to follow in May.

The 49-year-old was remanded in custody, although his defence barrister Christopher Knox said there would be a bail application at some point in the future.

Mrs Grant was found in the bedroom of the semi-detached house after police were called to a fire inside the property.

A post-mortem examination revealed she had been assaulted and strangled.
