Businesses have been warned to be on their guard against a new scam.
Fraudsters are sending professional-looking letters or emails, claiming to be from a contractor or partner known to the company. They say the bank details for payment have changed and ask the business to update their mandate to the new details provided. It could result in large sums of money transferring to the criminals’ bank accounts, then dissipated to hundreds of other accounts across the globe.
Northumbria Police says organisations in the force area have been targeted.
DI Steve Wouldhave said: “I’d urge any organisation, company or business, public and private sector, that receives a request to change bank details and payment mandates to be vigilant and to double check the source.”
Anyone who receives a letter should call police on 101, ext 69191.
