A MAJOR consumer group is warning people to be extra vigilant against bogus callers.
The Consumer Council for Water says that homes are being targeted by distraction burglars, who manage to gain access to properties by saying they are from utility companies, particularly ‘the water board’.
The organisation has now published a section on its website to help customers better protect themselves, including a list of genuine contact numbers for utility suppliers and a list of top tips.
Chairman Dame Yve Buckland said: “Bogus calling is a very disturbing crime because it deliberately targets vulnerable customers.
“We want to make sure that everyone has the information they need should someone unexpectedly come knocking.”
Advice includes keeping your door on the chain to check who is calling before opening it, asking for identification and checking it by phoning the organisation using a number from a previous bill or the phone book. If a visitor insists they need access before you carry out the necessary checks dial 999.
