A CYCLIST has died while taking part in a charity bike ride.

The man, in his 50s and from the Nottingham area, pulled up near to Red Row after feeling unwell during the Great North Bike Ride on Sunday, before collapsing.

He was cycling with a friend at the time and CPR was performed by nurses until an ambulance arrived, but he was pronounced dead soon after.

His family have been informed and police said that there are no suspicious circumstances and a post-mortem examination confirmed that he died of natural causes.

Lynn Lucas, joint organiser of the event, said she was devastated and offered her condolences.

She added that next year’s Great North Bike Ride will be dedicated to him.
