Defence dam put into operation

The large flood defence dam on the Mitford Estate has been put into operation to try and prevent major flooding in Morpeth.

The action was taken by the Environment Agency after water from the River Wansbeck went over its banks in sections of the town centre.

Flood warnings remain in place for the Abbey Mills, East Mill and the Riverside Leisure Centre areas.

The height of the water has resulted in the closure of the Oldgate Bridge.
