Morpeth Inner Wheel
Morpeth Inner Wheel ladies enjoyed an excellent talk and video at their first meeting after the summer break.
Mr Jim O’Connor gave a presentation entitled Dorothy’s Wells. This is a project he started after his wife died.
When visiting a school in Tanzania, Jim was shocked to see the older children had to leave their lessons to search for water, which was so contaminated he determined to provide a village well and a latrine for the school.
After months of research, planning and fund-raising, Jim at last saw his dream come true. It was an emotional journey seeing clean water gushing out from the dry ground as he unveiled a plaque to his wife Dorothy’s memory.
Jim has gone on to provide eight wells by March 2014, with much help from his community in Durham, and he received many wonderful contributions after his project was shown on Look North.
Members were absorbed by his presentation and extremely moved by seeing the children’s joy in just receiving clean water, which we take for granted in our everyday lives.
Our new President Michelle Nelson thanked him for his visit and presented him with a cheque towards his project.
