A special garden for young people to remember their loved ones will be opened at the weekend.
The Duchess of Northumberland will officially open the Young People’s Garden of Light at Sanderson Arcade, Morpeth, on Saturday.
Morpeth First School will perform Christmas carols at 3pm before the Duchess unveils a plaque and places the first light in the garden at 3.30pm.
The Garden of Light is part of Morpeth Rotary Club’s Tree of Light Christmas Appeal. Messages can be left on the Tree of Light and children can put a light in the garden, which will be lit for 72 hours.
The proceeds from the project will go to the Great North Air Ambulance Service, Cancer Research North East and Barnabas Safe and Sound.
Sanderson Arcade also welcomes some special guests from the North Pole on Saturday. Reindeer will be bringing the magic of Christmas to the centre’s piazza areas from 10am to 4pm, when youngsters will be able to meet and feed them. Friends of the North Pole will be making the trip to the Arcade on Saturday from 10am till 4pm.
The centre will also have free mince pies and mulled wine with live music every Sunday throughout December.
