Five eateries in Northumberland have been shortlisted for a prestigious national food award.

After a large number of nominations received from the public, the finalists for the fifth Food Awards England have been compiled.

They include the Drift Café, Cresswell, in the Café/Bistro Café of the Year (North East) category and the Library Restaurant at Matfen Hall Hotel Golf and Spa, Matfen Village, and Catch Seafood, Ponteland, in the Hotel Restaurant of the Year (North) category.

The others from the county are The Apple Inn, Lucker, in the Gastro Pub of the Year (North) category and Lal Khazana, Shilbottle, in the Best Indian Establishment (North) category.

Bernard Bloodworth, general manager at Matfen Hall, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to be finalists for the Hotel Restaurant of the Year.

“The nomination is testament to the fantastic work and commitment from our executive head chef Paul Blakey, who ensures our Library Restaurant always offers a fine dining experience to remember and savour.

“Our menu, which changes seasonally, is always filled with the best quality, locally sourced ingredients we’re lucky enough to have on our doorstep.”

A black-tie ceremony for Food Awards England, organised by Creative Oceanic, will take place at the Mercure Manchester Piccadilly Hotel on Monday.
