A-level results just get better and better at Morpeth’s high school.

King Edward VI School achieved a 99 per cent pass rate in this year’s A-level exams across 33 subjects.

And despite having its biggest ever year group for the exams, with 220 students in Year 13 — 20 more than last year, the school also saw an increase in the percentage of top grades awarded.

Last year 49 per cent of results were A* to B, but this year more than half, 51 per cent, made the grades.

And 25 per cent were marked A* or A grade.

Among the high achievers, the school has no fewer than eight pupils going on to study medicine and at least one veterinary student.

Headteacher Simon Taylor said: “It has been another good year. There has been a really strong performance across all subject areas.

“At the moment the vast majority of students have got into university, either with their first choice or reserve offer. For some students they are still looking a clearing and the staff are working with them now on that, but a very small number of students are in that position.

“This set of results first and foremost is a testament to the hard work of the students. A-levels are challenging exams and the interest and dedication of our students is the single most important factor. Added to that we have wonderful staff who work extremely hard to provide the right support.

“As well as the academic curriculum is the enrichment work that we do, which is so important to help prepare youngsters for the world of work and being successful in the rest of their lives.”

A new sixth form building opened at the school in the spring following a £700,000 investment to ensure pupils have first class facilities for their studies.

Mr Taylor said: “This is a refurbished building and it has been extended. It is a fantastic new building and it is necessary because of the growing sixth form and the strength of the sixth form.”
