DREAMS of being involved in Formula One has driven a star student from Ponteland to exam success.
Daniel Barber is hoping to start his journey to the motorsport industry at the University of Nottingham, where he will study mechanical engineering.
The 18-year-old, who lives in Darras Hall, achieved A* grades in his maths, further maths and physics A-Levels. Earlier this year, he was part of the Ponteland High School team that finished third in the British Schools Karting Championship.
“I thought I would get the three As I needed for the course, but I was in shock when I discovered it was all A*s – that was beyond what I expected,” he said.
“I didn’t do too well in one of my maths exams, but it turned out that I managed to sneak the A* by one mark.
“I’ve been interested in cars and motor racing for a long time and I’m aiming to be part of the industry one day. I did work on my own kart, but I’ve got a lot to learn because cars are a lot more complex. My ultimate ambition is to be involved in F1, ideally as a designer.”
