It was success at the double during a London ceremony for a publication produced at Morpeth’s high school.

The Student Review news magazine written and put together by school pupils, for school pupils was the winner in the Best Overall Editorial Content and Best Magazine categories at the Shine Media Awards 2014, organised by The Stationers’ Foundation.

This was a fantastic achievement for the team of seven King Edward VI School students – Jack Taylor, Beth Lamb, Mark McGarry, Angus Kirk (editor-in-chief), Liam Tiffin, Laura Cadman and Nicky Hope – as there were entries from more than 200 schools across England and Wales.

The awards ceremony took place at Stationers’ Hall in London. It was hosted by Daily Mail journalist and columnist Simon Heffer and the deputy editor of Cosmopolitan, Suzy Cox.

Angus said: “The Shine Media Awards were fantastic and to win both categories we were nominated for out of schools across the country was an amazing achievement.

“The Stationers’ Hall was a beautiful venue and having workshops before the ceremony was a great way to give an insight into the world of journalism and other media.”

One of the workshops was delivered by Cosmopolitan, a glossy magazine for women, and the others included a book-binding session from Shepherds’ Sangorski & Sutcliffe Bookbinders.

Student Voice, leadership and enrichment co-ordinator at KEVI, Victoria Najafi, said: “It is a tremendous achievement for the Student Review team to have won two national categories. With the amount of schools that had entered the awards, I don’t think any of us expected it at all.

“With such national recognition, I’m sure this will inspire many more of our aspiring journalists to join the team.”
