A group of school students have talked their way into a trip to Liverpool.

After a number of outstanding debates and emotive speeches during the European Youth Parliament (EYP) North East regional forum, the Ponteland High team was selected by the jury to represent the area at the national session, which will take place in the North West city in July.

The resolution topics up for debate were diverse and challenging. They included ‘freedom of the press’, ‘imported energy’ and ‘the victims of Islamic State’.

The regional forums give young people the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in debating and public speaking, as well as their knowledge of the key issues in British and European politics.

Ponteland High School has a proud tradition of both competing and succeeding in this arena, with several ex-students now alumni of the EYP. Its team members for this year’s debates are Elliot Barker, Michael Dwyer, Ben Eggleston, Molly Hall, Bea Holliday, Helena Grezo, Matthew Quigley, James Plumeridge and Owen Stratford.
