THE North East has maintained its position of having the highest overall rate of improvement at GCSE grades A to C of any region since 2002.

Pass rates at the Government benchmark have gone up by 16.1 per cent over the period, including a 1.1 per cent increase this year.

And the area continues to come second only to London in the improvement rate for A grades over the last nine years.

Director of SCHOOLS NorthEast – a teacher-led regional network of schools – Beccy Earnshaw said: “Congratulations must go to all of our students who achieved the record-breaking results and to our schools whose hard work has led to the region’s sustained improvement.”
