Asbestos has been found at an allotment site in Morpeth.
But the housing association which owns the St Mary’s Field plots has decided that the substance can be left in situ with regular monitoring.
The matter was reported at a meeting of Morpeth Town Council’s property and asset management committee as it is in talks with Isos Housing about the potential transfer of this and other allotment sites to the authority.
Council clerk Gillian Turner said that if it takes on any plots, all asbestos discovered will be cleared, even if a site only contains a small amount of the substance.
An Isos Housing spokesman said: “Having received a report from a specialist contractor, we are satisfied that the fencing boards containing asbestos around one of the plots at St Mary’s Field can remain in place, subject to continued monitoring.”
