Beauty spots make the grade

BEAUTY spots in Northumberland continue to make the grade with a strong showing in the Good Beach Guide.

Locally, both Druridge Bay North and South beaches have made the Marine Conservation Society’s guide, which recommends bathing beaches where tests have shown excellent water quality.

The picture is similar across the North East, which is the best performing region in the country, with 53 of its 64 beaches tested meeting the criteria.

Across the UK 68 percent of beaches tested have made the guide — the best results in its 25 year history.

Water testing is carried out between May and September, with samples usually taken once a week and tested for bacteria that indicate the presence of pollution from sewage or animal waste. More stringent standards are due to come into force in 2015.
