Helping hand with waste

COUNTY residents are being given a helping hand to recycle some of their own waste.

Composting bins are on offer from Northumberland County Council at a reduced price of £16, plus £5.49 delivery.

The bins can be used to store garden and other waste products that will turn into natural fertiliser in time for spring.

Items that can be put into it include fruit, vegetable peelings, old flowers, grass cuttings, coffee grounds, tea bags and vacuum cleaner dust.

Home composting also helps to lower carbon emissions, as it reduces the need for the burning of waste.

Council Executive Member for Highways and Neighbourhood Services Alan Thompson said: “I would encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to make a contribution to our environment.

“We are delighted to be able to provide this opportunity in partnership with Get Composting. Making the way in which we dispose of our waste more environmentally friendly is crucial.”

A variety of bin sizes and composting accessories are also available. To make an order, call 0845 130 6090 or visit
