This colourful kingfisher was caught on camera by Herald photographer Peter McCartney.
Peter spotted the beautiful bird beside the Chantry footbridge in Morpeth while he was out and about taking photographs for the newspaper.
Remarkably the rare sighting seems to have set off a run of twitching for Peter as a few days later he saw three more of the birds in Wallsend, managing to snap a picture of one of them.
He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I saw the kingfisher in Morpeth. It was just sitting there under the bridge and wasn’t bothered about me at all. Little did I realise I would see another three within a week.”
