Stub out litter problem

COUNCILLORS have moved to try to reduce the number of cigarettes dropped on the ground in parts of a Morpeth beauty spot.

Residents have raised concerns with Morpeth Town Council about the effects of people smoking irresponsibly in Carlisle Park.

Although members of the authority’s Property and Asset Management Committee said it would be impossible to introduce a ban because it is outdoors, they did agree to put up some information signs by play areas and the paddling pool on a trial basis.

It is hoped that this will encourage people not to smoke in areas where children are playing.
